What This Service Covers

Wiring is the backbone of every electrical system. Older Toronto homes often still contain knob-and-tube or aluminum wiring, both of which carry specific risks and may not handle modern loads safely. We install new wiring for renovations and additions, extend existing circuits, and rewire homes and units where the old wiring has become a hazard.

Signs Wiring May Need Attention

The signs below do not always mean something is seriously wrong, but they are worth checking out — especially if more than one is present at the same time.

  • Your home still has knob-and-tube or aluminum wiring
  • Insulation is cracked, brittle, or missing on visible wires
  • Two-prong ungrounded outlets throughout the home
  • Lights dim when appliances turn on
  • A burning smell with no obvious source
  • You are renovating and need new circuits run

Wiring Work We Handle

  • Whole-home and partial rewiring
  • Knob-and-tube and aluminum wiring remediation
  • New circuits for renovations, additions, and finished basements
  • Dedicated circuits for appliances, EV chargers, and HVAC
  • Upgrading ungrounded two-prong outlets to grounded three-prong
  • Running cable for new fixtures, outlets, and switches

Safety Considerations

  • Knob-and-tube wiring should not be surrounded by insulation — it relies on air circulation to dissipate heat.
  • Aluminum wiring connections can loosen over time and create fire hazards at devices; we use proper connectors and CO/ALR-rated devices.
  • New wiring is sized to the load and protected by the correct breaker.
  • Wiring work is permitted and inspected through the ESA.

FAQ

Electrical Wiring & Rewiring — Common Questions

Is knob-and-tube wiring automatically dangerous?
Not automatically, but it is outdated, ungrounded, and not suitable for modern loads. It becomes dangerous when it has been modified improperly, covered in insulation, or connected to devices it was not designed for. We inspect what you have and recommend whether remediation or full replacement is appropriate.
Do I have to rewire my whole house at once?
No. We can prioritize the highest-risk circuits first — for example, kitchen and bath wiring, or any exposed knob-and-tube in areas being renovated — and phase the rest of the work. A whole-home rewire is sometimes the most practical option during a major renovation.
Can you add a grounded outlet where there is no ground wire?
Yes, by running a new ground wire or installing a GFCI outlet (which provides personnel protection even without an equipment ground). We explain the difference and recommend the right approach for each location.
How disruptive is a rewire?
A full rewire involves opening walls to access and replace cable, so it is usually done during a renovation or when walls are already open. For smaller projects we look for ways to fish cable with minimal drywall cuts. We discuss access and patching before starting.
