What This Service Covers

Circuit breakers are designed to trip when a circuit is overloaded or faulted — that tripping is a safety feature, not a nuisance. But when a breaker trips repeatedly, will not reset, or feels hot, it usually means something is wrong that needs to be diagnosed and repaired. We troubleshoot and repair breaker issues across Toronto, from a single failed breaker to a panel with ongoing problems.

Breaker Problems to Take Seriously

The signs below do not always mean something is seriously wrong, but they are worth checking out — especially if more than one is present at the same time.

  • A breaker trips repeatedly on the same circuit
  • A breaker will not stay reset
  • The breaker or panel feels warm or smells burnt
  • You hear buzzing or crackling from the panel
  • A breaker is physically damaged or feels loose
  • Two circuits are sharing a single breaker (double-tap)

Breaker Work We Handle

  • Diagnosing the cause of repeated tripping
  • Replacing failed or recalled breakers
  • Correcting double-tapped breakers
  • Adding AFCI and GFCI breakers for protection
  • Balancing loads across circuits
  • Tightening loose connections inside the panel
  • Installing dedicated circuits for high-load appliances

Safety Considerations

  • Never force a breaker to stay on — repeated tripping means the breaker is doing its job.
  • A hot or burnt-smelling panel is a serious hazard; call us and keep the area clear.
  • We de-energize the panel or individual circuits before working inside.
  • We only install breakers listed for your specific panel model.

FAQ

Circuit Breaker Repairs — Common Questions

Why does my breaker trip only when I use multiple things at once?
The circuit is overloaded — the combined load exceeds what the breaker is rated for. The fix is usually to move some loads to a different circuit, or install a dedicated circuit for high-draw devices like microwaves, space heaters, or hair dryers.
My breaker will not reset at all. What does that mean?
It usually means there is still a fault on the circuit, the breaker has failed mechanically, or the breaker is tripping internally the moment you reset it. Do not keep forcing it. We diagnose whether the problem is the circuit or the breaker itself and repair it accordingly.
What is a double-tapped breaker and why is it a problem?
A double-tap is when two wires are landed under one breaker lug that is designed for one wire. The connection can loosen and arc. We fix it by installing a breaker rated for two wires, moving one circuit to an open space, or adding a small sub-panel if the panel is full.
Should I upgrade to AFCI or GFCI breakers?
AFCI breakers detect arcing from damaged cords or loose connections and are now required in many living areas. GFCI breakers protect an entire circuit from ground faults. If your panel is older and your breakers are standard, we can add AFCI or GFCI protection at the breaker or at the first outlet on the circuit.
